Do people still get AIDS from transfusion?

Question: Since the institution of HIV testing, how many cases of posttransfusion AIDS have occurred in the United States?

Response: As of December 1999, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) was aware of 39 adults or adolescents and two children who developed AIDS after receiving blood that screened negative for HIV antibody. Accurate data regarding the number of posttransfusion HIV infection (including those recipients who have or have not developed AIDS) are not available, because mandatory reporting varies by state.
